The Knowledge of God Planted in Every Human Soul

While Scripture indeed affirms natural revelation — “that which may be known of God is manifest in them” (Romans 1:19-20) — there is a hermeneutical danger when this general awareness is elevated or misunderstood as a salvific or self-sufficient knowledge of God. In contemporary ideology, “knowledge of God” can be co-opted into a universalist or innate spirituality narrative that downplays the necessity of Christ, Scripture, and divine revelation for true salvation. The result can be a subtle shift toward naturalistic spirituality where human conscience and experience replace the exclusive authority of Christ and the Gospel.

Scripture Insight: Scripture teaches that God has placed a witness of Himself inside every human being. Creation, conscience, and the order of the world all testify that a Creator exists, leaving humanity without excuse. This inner awareness is not something learned from culture or religion, but something God Himself has woven into His creation. Every person is born with a sense that life has meaning, that morality is real, and that there is something greater than themselves. This is why no society has ever existed without some form of worship, because the knowledge of God is already present in the human heart.
Yet the Bible also reveals that this natural knowledge is not enough to save a person. Sin corrupts how we interpret that inner witness. Instead of drawing us toward the true God, fallen humanity often reshapes that awareness into idols, philosophies, or self-made spiritual systems. People suppress what they know to be true and replace it with something more comfortable, more controllable, and more flattering to human pride. The problem is not that God has failed to reveal Himself, but that the human heart resists His authority.
This is why Christ is essential. While creation reveals that God exists, only Jesus reveals who God truly is. Knowing that there is a Creator is not the same as being reconciled to Him. Salvation does not come through instinct, conscience, or spiritual feeling, but through the living Word made flesh. Jesus is not one path to God among many, but the doorway through which true knowledge of God becomes life, forgiveness, and restoration.
