Better the Little of the Righteous

Summary

Psalm 37:16 teaches that righteousness outweighs riches. A righteous man may possess little in the eyes of the world, yet his peace and favor from God surpass the hollow abundance of the wicked.

The world equates wealth with worth, but God’s Word turns this measure upside down. Riches without righteousness may dazzle for a moment, but they cannot bring peace, joy, or eternal security. In contrast, the little that belongs to the righteous is better because it is sanctified by God’s favor, bringing contentment and rest. Proverbs 15:16 affirms: “Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith.”

This truth echoes through the New Testament as well. Paul declares in 1 Timothy 6:6 that “godliness with contentment is great gain.” True gain, then, is not in the storehouse of wealth but in the treasure of a clear conscience before God. The wicked may boast in their abundance, yet they cannot escape fear, guilt, or judgment. The righteous, though having little, sleep in peace and walk in liberty.

To embrace this verse is to embrace freedom from comparison. It is to declare that having God’s presence, even in scarcity, is greater than worldly abundance without Him. This is why Christ taught us to lay up treasures not on earth, but in heaven—where moth and rust cannot corrupt, and where true riches endure forever.

Poetic Reflection

“Better the Little”
A little bread in righteous hands
Is treasure rich on holy lands.
Though gold may glimmer, fade, and flee,
The just walk on in liberty.

The wicked boast in heaps of gain,
Yet find no shelter from the rain.
But peace and joy the faithful keep—
Though poor in coin, they’re rich in sleep.
