John 8:44–47 leaves no room for ambiguity. Jesus directly identifies two lineages: those who are of God and hear His Word, and those who are of their father the devil, who reject truth and embrace lies. This is not a metaphor but a reality of spiritual allegiance. To reject God’s truth is to embrace Satan’s deception, for as Jesus says, he is the father of lies and has been a murderer from the beginning.
The apostle John affirms this reality in 1 John 5:19: “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.” This world does not operate in neutrality—it is under the sway of the evil one. Its systems, ideologies, and values celebrate tolerance of sin while rejecting righteousness. Those who walk in its ways reveal their allegiance, even if unknowingly.
Yet Jesus makes clear: those who are of God will hear His words. They will recognize His voice, receive His truth, and walk in His ways. This inevitably brings opposition, for the world cannot tolerate the light of Christ. As He warned in John 15:18–19, “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.”

“If you live like the world, you are of the world.”
But if you belong to Christ, the world will hate you—because it hated Him first.
